ARTIST STATEMENT

I paint to capture something of the elusive and unseen in a tangible space. In the natural world, I see evidence of fracture and decay but also of regeneration and transcendence. For me, this duality mimics our experience of holding space for both brokenness and beauty, sorrow and joy, the every day and the holy. This tension shapes my process. My painting is a prayer of sorts; a wrestling with holding onto the eternal in the midst of the fragmented.

Landscape inspires my lines, compositions, and colors; however, my work is referential rather than specific. From intense mark-making to building layers of color and light with paint, charcoal, pastels, and oil bars, I pursue the enduring, while seeking to savor the beauty of the ordinary.

About me

I began painting in high school after taking my first art class and realizing I loved it and could get lost in my thoughts while painting. I pursued art in college and graduated with a BA in art from Auburn University in 1996. After taking a hiatus from making art while raising kiddos and homeschooling, I have returned to painting and am so grateful to have space in my life to pursue art again.

I live and work in Alabama and for many years wanted nothing more than to find my way out of here, but now, there’s no place I’d rather live. In just a few hours, I can be at some of the most beautiful forests, beaches, plains, canyons, and waterfalls around, which all inspire me in their own way.

I’m a mama to three amazing, creative kids - who aren’t really kids anymore. And wife to my best friend and my stabilizing force. I’m grateful to live this life with him.
